Team 8114 brings together students, mentors, educators, families, and community partners who share a passion for learning, innovation, and teamwork.
Each season, the Rocketeers take on a new FIRST Robotics Competition challenge that requires creativity, commitment, and collaboration. While building a competition-ready robot is a major part of what we do, our team is ultimately built around people—each contributing different skills, perspectives, and experiences toward one shared goal.
Together, we learn from challenges, celebrate our progress, and proudly represent the Rocketeers throughout the Boerne community and at every competition.
ONE TEAM. MANY ROLES
Building a competition robot requires much more than mechanical ability. Students develop hands-on experience across several technical and organizational areas, working together to transform an idea into a competition-ready robot.
Students may concentrate on particular areas based on their interests and strengths, but collaboration across the entire team is essential to our success.
Develops robot concepts, creates digital models, and helps transform the team’s strategy into a practical build plan.
Fabricates, assembles, tests, repairs, and improves the physical systems that allow the robot to perform.
Installs and maintains the robot’s wiring, motors, sensors, power systems, and electronic components.
Creates and tests the code that controls the robot’s movement, automated functions, and driver-operated systems.
Keeps the robot competition-ready through inspections, maintenance, repairs, organization, and quick problem-solving between matches.
Operates the robot during competition, communicates under pressure, and puts the team’s design, programming, and match strategy into action on the field.
While students may focus on particular technical or organizational roles, strategy, safety, and community outreach are shared responsibilities. Every Rocketeer contributes to preparing for competition, maintaining a safe and productive environment, and representing Team 8114 throughout the year.
OUR MENTORS
Throughout the season, students work alongside experienced mentors who generously volunteer their time, knowledge, and encouragement. Mentors help students turn ideas into working solutions while allowing them the freedom to explore, make decisions, overcome setbacks, and learn through experience.
Their guidance helps our students develop technical knowledge along with the communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills needed both in competition and beyond. We DEEPLY appreciate everything they do for our team!
Larry Gros has been a mentor for FIRST Robotics since 2008 when his sons became involved in the program. He mentored CRyptonite Robotics, Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, until 2022 and has mentored the Rockeers, Champion High School in Boerne, since 2023. As a retired engineer with 40 years’ experience working for ExxonMobil, Larry believes FIRST Robotics offers and unparalleled opportunity for students to learn hands-on analytical problem solving, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills
Behind our students and mentors is a dedicated network of families and volunteers who help keep Team 8114 moving forward.
The Rocketeers Booster Club supports the team through fundraising, sponsorship development, meals, travel assistance, volunteer coordination, and access to the resources students and mentors need throughout the season.
